Instructions
Preparation Steps
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a cast-iron skillet or cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the buttermilk and egg into the flour mixture. If using raisins, add them now.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead slightly.
Form the dough into a round and place on prepared pan.
Cut an 'X' into the top of the dough to help bake evenly.
Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Notes
For a sweeter touch, you can add a tablespoon of honey to the buttermilk mixture. Serve warm with butter or jam.
