For the Dish:

  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can 14 ounces diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Add the finely diced onion and minced garlic to the pot, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes (with their juice), dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Break the spaghetti in half and add it to the pot along with the beef or vegetable broth. Make sure the spaghetti is submerged in the liquid.
