Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce like A1 or similar
  • 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese or mozzarella if preferred
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional for serving: extra cheese pickled jalapeños, or sautéed mushrooms

Instructions

Cook the Meat and Veggies:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  • Drain any excess fat and return the skillet to the heat.
  • Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook, stirring, until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

Make the Sauce:

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and cornstarch until smooth.
  • Add this mixture to the skillet along with the Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce.
  • Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.

Add Cheese:

  • Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese until melted and well incorporated into the meat mixture.

Prepare the Buns:

  • Toast the hamburger buns lightly if desired for extra texture and flavor.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes:

  • Spoon the meat mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns. If desired, top with additional cheese, pickled jalapeños, or sautéed mushrooms.

Serve:

  • Cap the sandwiches with the top halves of the buns and serve immediately.
