Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • Warm water: 1 cup 240ml
  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon
  • Active dry yeast: 2 1/4 teaspoons 1 packet
  • All-purpose flour: 3 cups 360g, plus more for kneading
  • Olive oil: 2 tablespoons plus extra for greasing
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon

For the Topping:

  • Butter: 3 tablespoons melted
  • Garlic powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dried oregano: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dried basil: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Grated Parmesan cheese: 2 tablespoons
  • Salt: 1/4 teaspoon or to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes, until frothy.
  • Add the flour, olive oil, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Shape the Breadsticks:

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into strips, approximately 1 inch wide and 4 inches long. Place the strips on a greased baking sheet, leaving some space between each for them to expand. Cover and let them rise again until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare the Topping:

  • In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried basil, and salt.

Bake:

  • Once the breadsticks have risen, brush them generously with the butter and herb mixture. Sprinkle the tops with grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serve:

  • Serve the breadsticks warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
