Ingredients

For the Wings:

  • 2 lbs chicken wings tips removed and cut at the joint
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil optional, for baking

For the Homemade BBQ Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper adjust to taste

Instructions

Preparing the Wings:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) if baking. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Alternatively, you can grill or fry the wings.
  • Season the wings with salt and pepper, and toss them with olive oil if baking.

Bake, grill, or fry the wings until they are golden brown and crispy:

  • For baking: Place wings on the prepared rack and bake for about 45-50 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • For grilling: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and grill the wings for about 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally.
  • For frying: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry the wings in batches until golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.

Making the BBQ Sauce:

  • Combine all sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth.
  • Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly and flavors have melded.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. For a smoother sauce, you can blend it using an immersion blender or in a regular blender once slightly cooled.

Combining Wings with Sauce:

  • Toss the cooked wings in the homemade BBQ sauce until they're fully coated. You can do this in a large bowl or return them to the oven for a few minutes to caramelize the sauce.
  • Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired.
