Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

  • 1 box of brownie mix plus ingredients called for on the box, usually oil, water, and eggs
  • Or your favorite homemade brownie recipe

For the Peanut Butter Mousse:

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 package 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy cream whipped to stiff peaks

For Layering:

  • 1 container 8 ounces whipped topping (or additional whipped cream)
  • 1 cup chopped peanuts or chopped peanut butter cups for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Brownies:

  • Bake the Brownies: Prepare the brownie mix according to package instructions (or your homemade recipe) in a 9x13-inch pan. Let them cool completely, then cut into small squares.

Make the Peanut Butter Mousse:

  • Combine Peanut Butter and Cream Cheese: In a large bowl, beat together the peanut butter and softened cream cheese until smooth.
  • Add Sugar and Vanilla: Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until well incorporated.
  • Fold in Whipped Cream: Gently fold the whipped cream into the peanut butter mixture until no white streaks remain, creating a light and fluffy mousse.

Assemble the Trifle:

  • Layer Brownies: In a large trifle dish or glass bowl, place a layer of brownie squares at the bottom.
  • Add Peanut Butter Mousse: Spread a layer of peanut butter mousse over the brownies.
  • Add Whipped Topping: Add a layer of whipped topping over the mousse.
  • Repeat Layers: Continue layering brownies, peanut butter mousse, and whipped topping until the dish is filled, ending with a layer of whipped topping.
  • Garnish: Sprinkle the top with chopped peanuts or chopped peanut butter cups for garnish.

Chill and Serve:

  • Refrigerate the Trifle: Cover and refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to set.
  • Serving: Serve chilled, spooning out portions that include all the layers.
