  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk Preferably whole or 2% milk
  • 1 tsp salt To taste
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper Freshly ground
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg Optional
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese Grated
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley Chopped, for garnish

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Cook the penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until smooth.
  • Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly, until the mixture begins to thicken.
  • Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir in the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.
  • Add the cooked penne pasta to the sauce, tossing to coat the pasta evenly. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

This recipe can be easily doubled for larger gatherings. Add cooked chicken or vegetables for a heartier meal.
