  • 1.5 pounds ground beef 80% lean
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth low sodium
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 pounds potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter divided
  • 0.5 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté onions until translucent, then add garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Add ground beef to the skillet, cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, peas, and carrots. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, boil potatoes in a pot of salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and return to pot.
  • Mash potatoes with 2 tablespoons of butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Pour beef mixture into a baking dish, spread mashed potatoes on top, and dot with remaining butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Serve hot.

Notes

For a twist, add a layer of shredded cheese between the beef and potatoes!
