  • 0.25 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 0.5 tsp dried oregano
  • 0.25 tsp granulated sugar optional, for balance
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil chopped

Preparation Steps

  • Prep the produce: chop the tomatoes, slice the onion, and mince the garlic.
  • Whisk the olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano, and sugar in a large bowl.
  • Add tomatoes, onion, and garlic to the bowl and toss until evenly coated.
  • Let the salad rest 5–10 minutes for flavors to meld.
  • Fold in the basil, taste, and adjust seasoning before serving.

Notes

Variation: Swap red wine vinegar for lemon juice and add a pinch of red pepper flakes for gentle heat. For extra richness, top with torn fresh mozzarella.
Serving & storage: Serve slightly chilled or at room temperature. Leftovers keep in an airtight container up to 2 days; refresh with a splash of vinegar before serving.
