  • 2 lb ground beef 80/20 ground chuck for best flavor
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese optional, for topping
  • 4 whole hamburger buns toasted if desired
  • 0.5 cup barbecue sauce for brushing

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your smoker to 225°F using your preferred wood chips.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Form the beef mixture into 4 equally-sized patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Place the patties directly on the smoker's grill grates and smoke for about 1 hour or until internal temperature reaches 160°F.
  • Brush the patties with barbecue sauce and add a slice of cheddar cheese on top during the last 5 minutes of smoking.
  • Remove the patties from the smoker and allow them to rest for a few minutes before serving on hamburger buns.

Notes

For an added kick, consider adding a pinch of smoked paprika to the beef mixture.
