  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder preferably Dutch-processed
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil can substitute with melted butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring adjust to preference
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix the oil, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, red food coloring, and vinegar until well combined.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

To make a cream cheese frosting, whip together 4 oz softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup softened butter, 1 cup powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract.
