Preparation Steps
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Pour the cold buttermilk into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently until it comes together. Pat it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
Fold the dough in half, then in half again. Pat it out again to 1/2 inch thickness.
Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
Brush the tops with melted butter and bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.
Notes
These homemade biscuits are best enjoyed fresh and warm. Serve with honey or jam if desired.
