Main Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • 1 cup buttermilk cold
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour the cold buttermilk into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently until it comes together. Pat it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Fold the dough in half, then in half again. Pat it out again to 1/2 inch thickness.
  • Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Brush the tops with melted butter and bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.

Notes

These homemade biscuits are best enjoyed fresh and warm. Serve with honey or jam if desired.
