This easy homemade caramel sauce is perfect for drizzling over ice cream, brownies, or your favorite desserts. With just a few ingredients, you can make a delicious caramel sauce in minutes.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Allow it to boil until it reaches a deep amber color, about 6-8 minutes.
Remove from heat and carefully add the heavy cream while whisking continuously. The mixture will bubble up, so be cautious.
Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
Add salt if making salted caramel. Allow the caramel to cool before transferring to a jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Notes
This caramel sauce is perfect for topping ice cream, pancakes, or even adding to your morning coffee. Warm it slightly before use for a smoother pour.
