  • 10.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup one standard can
  • 0.5 cup milk 2% or whole
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 0.25 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional
  • 1.25 cup crispy fried onions divide for filling and topping
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter for greasing dish or dotting top

Preparation Steps

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish with a little butter.
  • Whisk soup, milk, soy sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until smooth.
  • Fold in the green beans, about 3/4 cup fried onions, and the cheddar if using.
  • Spread the mixture into the prepared dish and dot the top with any remaining butter.
  • Bake for 25 minutes until hot and bubbling around the edges.
  • Top with the remaining fried onions and bake 8–10 minutes more, until crisp and golden.
  • Let rest 5 minutes before serving to set the sauce.

Notes

Variation: Swap half the green beans for steamed broccoli florets, or add 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms for extra texture. Make-ahead: Assemble up to a day in advance without the topping, cover and refrigerate; bake 5–10 minutes longer, then add onions to finish.
