Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2.5 lb Russet potatoes peeled and quartered
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup whole milk warmed
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper or to taste
  • 0.25 cup sour cream optional for extra creaminess
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives chopped, for garnish

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  • Reduce heat to medium and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander, then return them to the pot.
  • Add the butter to the potatoes and mash with a potato masher until smooth.
  • Gradually add the warmed milk, continuing to mash, until the potatoes are creamy and smooth. Stir in the salt and pepper.
  • If using, stir in the sour cream for additional creaminess.
  • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl, garnish with chopped chives, and serve hot.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using half-and-half instead of milk, or adding roasted garlic before mashing.
