Instructions
Preparation Steps
Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.
Reduce heat to medium and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork.
Drain the potatoes in a colander, then return them to the pot.
Add the butter to the potatoes and mash with a potato masher until smooth.
Gradually add the warmed milk, continuing to mash, until the potatoes are creamy and smooth. Stir in the salt and pepper.
If using, stir in the sour cream for additional creaminess.
Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl, garnish with chopped chives, and serve hot.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider using half-and-half instead of milk, or adding roasted garlic before mashing.
