  • 0.5 cup warm water about 110°F
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 egg yolk for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon water for egg wash
  • 2 tablespoons honey optional, for sweetness

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  • Add flour, sugar, salt, oil, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined, then knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1.5 hours.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
  • Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Mix the egg yolk and water for the egg wash and brush over the risen dough.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Challah tastes best fresh but can be stored at room temperature for a few days. Enjoy with butter and honey!
