Instructions
Preparation Steps
In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Add flour, sugar, salt, oil, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined, then knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1.5 hours.
Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Mix the egg yolk and water for the egg wash and brush over the risen dough.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Challah tastes best fresh but can be stored at room temperature for a few days. Enjoy with butter and honey!
