Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well
  • For the Topping:
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Prepare the Crock Pot: Lightly grease the inside of your crock pot or line it with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the granulated sugar, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Make the Batter: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Fold in the diced apples.
  • Pour into Crock Pot: Spread the batter evenly in the bottom of the crock pot.
  • Prepare the Topping: In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter. Pour the hot water gently over the top without stirring.
  • Cook the Cake: Cover the crock pot and cook on high for 2-3 hours or on low for 4-5 hours, or until the cake is set on top and the apples are tender. The bottom will have a pudding-like consistency.
  • Serve: Scoop the warm cake into bowls, ensuring you get some of the pudding-like sauce from the bottom. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
