Step-by-Step Guide Grilling Hobo Foil Packets

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (you can also use chicken, shrimp, or sausage)
  • 45 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced (any color)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Olive oil or melted butter
  • Additional seasonings (optional, such as Italian seasoning, paprika, or a dash of Worcestershire sauce)
  • Toppings: shredded cheese, fresh herbs, sour cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Ingredients:
    • Cut the vegetables into thin slices to ensure they cook evenly and thoroughly.
    • If using ground beef, form it into small patties. If using other proteins, cut them into bite-sized pieces to ensure they cook through.
  2. Assemble the Foil Packets:
    • Cut large squares of heavy-duty aluminum foil, enough to wrap the ingredients completely.
    • In the center of each foil square, layer the potatoes first, then the carrots, onions, and bell peppers. Season each layer with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Drizzle with olive oil or melted butter.
    • Place a beef patty or your choice of protein on top of the vegetables. Season again with salt, pepper, and any additional seasonings you like.
    • If desired, add your choice of toppings, like shredded cheese or a dash of Worcestershire sauce, on top of the protein.
  3. Fold and Seal the Packets:
    • Bring up two opposite sides of the foil and fold them together above the food. Crimp the edges tightly to seal. Then, fold and seal the two remaining sides, making sure the packet is completely closed and the steam won’t escape during cooking.
  4. Cook the Hobo Foil Packets:
    • For grilling: Place the packets directly on the grill over medium heat. Cook for about 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
    • For baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the packets on a baking sheet for about 35-40 minutes.
    • For campfire: Place the packets on hot coals (not directly in the fire), and cook for about 25-30 minutes, turning occasionally.
  5. Serve:
    • Carefully open the packets (watch out for steam), and check if the meat and vegetables are cooked through. Serve hot, with optional toppings like fresh herbs or a dollop of sour cream.
