How to Make Southern Chocolate Cobbler At Home

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake Layer:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Fudge Layer:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Cake Batter:
    • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
    • Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until the mixture is smooth.
    • Pour the batter into an ungreased 8-inch square baking dish, spreading evenly.
  3. Make the Fudge Layer:
    • In a separate small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder.
    • Sprinkle this cocoa-sugar mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.
    • Gently pour the hot water over the top. Do not stir; the water will sink down and form a fudge sauce during baking.
  4. Bake the Cobbler:
    • Bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the center is set and the top has a firm crust.
    • The cobbler will create a sauce on the bottom during baking, so don’t overcook it, which could cause the sauce to be absorbed fully.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top.
