Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/4 cup steak sauce (like A1 or similar)
- 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese (or mozzarella if preferred)
- 4 hamburger buns
- Optional for serving: extra cheese, pickled jalapeños, or sautéed mushrooms
Instructions
- Cook the Meat and Veggies:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Drain any excess fat and return the skillet to the heat.
- Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook, stirring, until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Make the Sauce:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and cornstarch until smooth.
- Add this mixture to the skillet along with the Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce.
- Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
- Add Cheese:
- Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese until melted and well incorporated into the meat mixture.
- Prepare the Buns:
- Toast the hamburger buns lightly if desired for extra texture and flavor.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
- Spoon the meat mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns. If desired, top with additional cheese, pickled jalapeños, or sautéed mushrooms.
- Serve:
- Cap the sandwiches with the top halves of the buns and serve immediately.
