- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk
For the Frosting:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Oven and Pan:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan, or line it with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar:
- In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla:
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Combine with Dry Ingredients and Milk:
- Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Bake the Cake:
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Make the Frosting:
- For the frosting, beat the butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
- Add milk and vanilla extract, adjusting the consistency with more milk or sugar as needed until it is smooth and spreadable.
- Frost the Cake:
- Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
- Serve:
- Cut into squares and serve. Garnish with sprinkles or edible flowers for a special touch.
