How to Make Delicious Apple Fritters at Home

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fritters:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and diced (about 2 medium-sized apples)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
    • In another bowl, mix the milk, beaten eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
    • Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, stirring until just mixed. Fold in the diced apples until they are well coated with the batter.
  2. Heat the Oil:
    • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or Dutch oven to 375°F (190°C). Use a candy or deep-fry thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  3. Fry the Fritters:
    • Carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust the heat as necessary to maintain the oil temperature.
    • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fritters to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  4. Make the Glaze:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract (if using) until smooth. The glaze should be thick but pourable. Adjust the consistency with more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
  5. Glaze the Fritters:
    • While the fritters are still warm, dip them into the glaze or drizzle the glaze over them. Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
