How to Make BBQ Wings with Homemade Sauce

Ingredients

Scale

For the Wings:

  • 2 lbs chicken wings, tips removed and cut at the joint
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for baking)

For the Homemade BBQ Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

Instructions

Preparing the Wings:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) if baking. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Alternatively, you can grill or fry the wings.
  2. Season the wings with salt and pepper, and toss them with olive oil if baking.
  3. Bake, grill, or fry the wings until they are golden brown and crispy:
    • For baking: Place wings on the prepared rack and bake for about 45-50 minutes, flipping halfway through.
    • For grilling: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and grill the wings for about 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally.
    • For frying: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry the wings in batches until golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.

Making the BBQ Sauce:

  1. Combine all sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly and flavors have melded.
  3. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. For a smoother sauce, you can blend it using an immersion blender or in a regular blender once slightly cooled.

Combining Wings with Sauce:

  1. Toss the cooked wings in the homemade BBQ sauce until they’re fully coated. You can do this in a large bowl or return them to the oven for a few minutes to caramelize the sauce.
  2. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired.
