Ingredients
Scale
For the Wings:
- 2 lbs chicken wings, tips removed and cut at the joint
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for baking)
For the Homemade BBQ Sauce:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- A pinch of cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
Instructions
Preparing the Wings:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) if baking. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Alternatively, you can grill or fry the wings.
- Season the wings with salt and pepper, and toss them with olive oil if baking.
- Bake, grill, or fry the wings until they are golden brown and crispy:
- For baking: Place wings on the prepared rack and bake for about 45-50 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- For grilling: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and grill the wings for about 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally.
- For frying: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry the wings in batches until golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.
Making the BBQ Sauce:
- Combine all sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth.
- Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly and flavors have melded.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. For a smoother sauce, you can blend it using an immersion blender or in a regular blender once slightly cooled.
Combining Wings with Sauce:
- Toss the cooked wings in the homemade BBQ sauce until they’re fully coated. You can do this in a large bowl or return them to the oven for a few minutes to caramelize the sauce.
- Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired.
