How to Make a Delicious Hamburger Mushroom Bake

Ingredients

For the Beef and Mushroom Layer:

  • Ground beef: 500g (1.1 lbs) – forms the base of the dish.
  • Onion: 1 medium, finely chopped – adds sweetness and depth.
  • Garlic: 2 cloves, minced – for flavor.
  • Mushrooms: 250g (about 2 cups), sliced – for a hearty, earthy taste.
  • Salt and pepper: To taste – for seasoning.
  • Worcestershire sauce: 1 tablespoon – enhances the umami flavor.
  • Fresh thyme or dried thyme: 1 teaspoon – for aroma.

For the Sauce:

  • Butter: 2 tablespoons – for richness.
  • All-purpose flour: 2 tablespoons – thickens the sauce.
  • Beef broth: 1 cup – adds depth and moisture.
  • Sour cream: 1/2 cup – creates a creamy texture.
  • Salt and pepper: To taste – for seasoning.

For the Topping:

  • Biscuit mix: 2 cups – for the crust. You can use a pre-made mix for convenience.
  • Milk: 1 cup – to form the biscuit dough.
  • Butter, melted: 1/4 cup – adds flavor and helps brown the topping.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the Beef and Mushrooms:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic until the beef is no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.
    • Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook until they’re softened. Season with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Spread the beef and mushroom mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Make the Sauce:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the sour cream. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour the sauce over the beef and mushroom layer in the baking dish.
  4. Prepare the Topping:
    • In a bowl, mix together the biscuit mix, milk, and melted butter until a soft dough forms. Drop spoonfuls of the dough over the sauce layer, spreading slightly.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
  6. Serve:
    • Let the Hamburger Mushroom Bake cool for a few minutes before serving. This dish is best enjoyed hot, with a side of steamed vegetables or a fresh salad.
